Chapter 6

"Can you see it?" Jess asked suddenly. Bam didn't have the foggiest idea to what Jess was talking about.

"See what?" Bam asked very unsure of where this was going. Jess continued to gaze out at the creek.

"See the beauty here." Jess replied softly. Bam wasn't sure what to say. He didn't want to insult his brother but this wasn't the nicest spot in the world.

In fact he couldn't really spot whatever beauty Jess was talking about.

"Not really." Bam said deciding to go with honesty for now.

"I didn't think you would." Jess commented softly. "Not many people do." Bam stared at his brother for a few seconds trying to decide whether or not this was a joke to try and cheer him up.

Jess' face was serious and he didn't try to add any humor to the situation. But how could he be serious about this place being beautiful? It was downright dingy.

"Look over there." Jess told him suddenly as he pointed to one of the houses across the creek. For a few seconds Bam stared across the river. He saw a small shabby house.

"What am I looking at Jess?" Bam asked getting slightly annoyed.

"The way the roof is slightly tilted. It makes the house look crooked almost. It looks like something you would see in a children's story book. The poor hero's house before he does whatever brave deed he's going to do. And the little garden out the back. Whoever lives there must spend a lot of time in that garden. It's been taken care of really well." Jess pointed out.

Bam was completely stunned. How could Jess notice all that?

"There's a little girl and boy playing out back too. They look like they're building something." Jess continued. "And that park over there, see how the trees form a little circle pattern near the water?"

"I guess." Bam mumbled still confused at how this was beautiful. The way Jess described it made the area seem nicer but still, it was a dull scene.

"Jess, why did you bring me here? What's the point of this?" Bam asked gesturing around him. Jess sighed before he spoke as if gathering his thoughts.

"I wanted to show you what's all around you, Bam. I wanted to show you how much beauty is everywhere." Jess replied.

"Jess, no offense, but this is not beautiful. This is a dirty river and some little houses, not exactly the best place in the world." Bam told him. A small sad smile slowly spread across Jess' face.

"Years ago I wouldn't have thought so either." Jess replied in almost a whisper. Bam suddenly noticed how sincere his brother was about this and got curious as to why he thought so much about this dull piece of land.

"Why not? What changed?" Bam asked, trying to soften his almost impatient tone. Bam had promised himself he wouldn't push Jess away too and wasn't about to break that promise now.

"It was right after I got out of the hospital after almost dying. Remember that car accident we were in with Ryan and Raab." Jess began, his voice almost shaking as if he didn't like to remember the experience. "I was scared, I didn't tell anyone but I was so scared. It scared me to think that I could have died." Jess paused and glanced at the river once more.

"A few days after I got home, I went on a walk and found this place. It's not the nicest place in the world but it's quiet and I just wanted some time alone, to get away from everything."

"I was sitting here and trying to, I don't know, trying to come to terms with everything I guess and I just...just noticed what a beautiful day it was out. I noticed how green the grass was and how amazing everything around me was. How amazing the little things we see everyday are. How amazing the things I always overlooked are. My friends, my family, just the world around me. How everything is a miracle in it's own way, small or big it's all a miracle. The miracle of life. I still come here when ever I need to think, to be alone." Jess let out a sigh as he finished.

Jess was sharing something with Bam that he had all to himself before. It had been part of him, and him alone, and now part of it was gone in a very small way. But at the same time he was very glad to share it with Bam, his best friend, his brother, and that made it so much better.

Sharing it multiplied the beauty ten fold. Jess waited for Bam to respond. A silence fell between them. Jess looked at Bam to find him staring intently across the creek, hoping to see what Jess was describing. A very small smile graced Bam's features for a second.

Bam turned to his brother, for the first time in months a there was a very small sparkle in his eyes again. It was tiny, but it was there.

"I see it. I do see it. But there's something..." Bam paused as the smile fell from his face. "But something is missing. I can't see it the way you can. Something isn't right and I don't know what it is, what I lost." Bam closed his eyes as a single tear ran slowly down his cheek.

"You'll find it, Bam. I know you will." Jess said as he got up. Bam grabbed his arm and Jess turned to look at him. Jess' heart soared as he looked at Bam.

The sparkle was still there, however tiny it was back and Jess vowed he would do everything in his power to make sure it never left again.

"Stay here, for awhile longer. Stay with me, please." Bam asked softy. Jess sat back down silently and they watched the creek pass by.

"Do you really think I can find it?" Bam whispered. Jess made sure Bam was looking at him before he spoke.

"Yes, I do Bam. I know you can and I'll do whatever you need to help you find it." Jess replied in utter seriousness.

Jess quickly wrapped Bam in a hug as Bam cried soft tears of gratitude.

"Thank you." Bam said in a barely audible whisper. "Thank you."
